Summary Sunday
Hey guys! Muneeb here. Sorry it’s been so long
since I last posted - been swamped with assignments and other commitments so
it’s taken to the end of the term for me to be able to write another post. Even
now I’ve only had the time to be able to write a review of only one show.
That show being Agents of SHIELD, season 5
episode 4: A Life Earned. I will first do a short, spoiler-free summary
and then go into more detail which will definitely contain spoilers.
Summary
This
week continues the strong foundations and world building that the previous
three episodes have done, further cementing the impression I have that this
season may just pan out to be the best one yet.
The
writing, acting and pacing of the show continue to be high quality with
well-taken camera shots, fight scenes that reflect the time and effort the
stunts team has put into it, and just all-round gripping action and
storytelling. Overall it was simply a fun and easily likeable episode and very
much worth catching up on if you haven’t already! (And also because I need more
people to rave about it with).
Rating: 9/10
!!!!SPOILERS AHEAD - YOU HAVE BEEN
WARNED!!!
In depth review
The
episode continues to develop the new characters of the season, especially Deke
and Kasius.
Deke
is no longer a one dimensional character and is a lot more interesting now that
he seemingly sold off Daisy to Kasius purely for personal game, though he
claims he is “playing the long game”. His revelation about the person transmitting
the radio message to the late Virgil is his father is certainly an interesting
development and opens up possibilities of what could happen. But I would side
with Coulson and not trust his words, for now.
Kasius,
the villain for this season (the first story arc anyway), is becoming an
increasingly unlikeable character - in a good way. The more we see his
sociopathic thinking, the more we begin to understand his motivations behind
his actions - purely for his own personal gain. I like this because it makes
the villain a little more than just being the bad guy - it makes the show more
enjoyable and interesting to watch.
Moving
onto the actual events of the episode, we open with Daisy tied down while a
Kasius servant takes a blood sample from her. Kasius quickly provides Daisy
with the choice of complying with him or else he will hurt Jemma, making the
whole ordeal for our hero that much more personal, which I feel is a good
development because it increases the emotionality of the connection the viewer
has with the characters. I personally enjoyed the snide remarks Daisy makes at
Kasius throughout this interaction.
The
constant back and forth between the agents of SHIELD and the people of this
dystopian, seemingly post-apocalyptic world about how it works is really good
to watch because it keeps the viewer hooked on the show, unable to peel
themselves away, always guessing the next development - at least it did me.
Gunner,
due to the excellent writing, unknowingly hits Mack’s soft spot about having children,
getting him worked up and lashing out at Gunner. - that was a good watch. This
leads to Elena later calming Mack down and reminding how good a person he is, I
liked watching that. I think I’ll be looking forward to watching this
relationship arc play out between Elena and Mac, because for once a love story
in a show doesn’t feel forced, out of place or cringey. The on screen chemistry
the two actors have is noticeable and ensures good viewing.
Overall,
the episode didn’t really have much wrong with it besides a couple cliches here
and there. It was just so likeable, gripping and I’d even say thrilling to
watch, I seriously can’t wait for the next one. Also, Fitz!!!
Thanks for reading guys, I understand that this
post had a lot in it but I thought I would take the opportunity to write in
more detail and give you a better idea of what I thought of it. I would really
enjoy hearing your thoughts on it.
I’ll be back next week (fingers crossed) with more
shows to talk about! See you then.
